Index Mutual Funds

These are mutual funds that aim to meet the performance of indexes such as the FTSE 100 index. They often offer significantly lower management fees than traditional mutual funds; broad diversification over many stocks; and tax efficiency. Returns will never exceed those of the index the fund tracks, after fund expenses are subtracted. By contrast, so-called actively managed funds run by professionals can sometimes beat the indexes by a wide margin.
