Divorce Court
To begin divorce proceedings in the U.K., one party must lodge a document known as a petition, explaining the reason for seeking a divorce, at a county court. A divorce lawyer will typically handle this. Divorce rates are much higher in the Western world than in more conservative countries such as India. But even there, divorces are on the rise. Indian proceedings are comparatively lengthy, and there are various acts governing divorces, many of which are based on religious law. For example, the divorces of Hindus are subject to the Hindu Marriage Act, whereas Muslims follow Islamic religious law. In cases where a couple is affected by more than one country's laws (e.g. two homes, or different nationalities) early legal advice is important, as that might have a big financial impact.
