Medical Doctor (M.D.) Degree
The Doctor of Medicine, or M.D., degree is common to many countries, including the U.K., Ireland, India and the U.S. However, it is not required for clinical qualification in all of these places. Other countries have similar credentials, such as the Dottore in Medicina e Chirurgia in Italy and the Doktor der Medizin in Germany. The academic requirements for these degrees vary depending on local laws and standards. In India, the M.D. is awarded after a three-year course of study that follows the undergraduate M.B.B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree. But medical school may only be the start, as doctors around the globe often need to follow up their training with residency programmes and fellowships if they want to specialise in a particular field of medicine.
